A Life Journey of Knowledge, Spirituality, and Self-Transformation
The journey of a young boy who set out in search of ancient wisdom and grew into a spiritual teacher dedicated to passing traditional knowledge on to future generations. Sunil Babu K. C., widely known as Sharayarajayogi Padmanandagiri, has devoted many years to the study, practice, and teaching of traditional Indian knowledge systems and spiritual disciplines.
Childhood: The Beginning of a Quest
Sunil Babu was born in 1969 in Kuzhithurai, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. He is the son of Chellappan Pillai, a retired Indian Army serviceman, and Nahomi, a teacher. His interest in ancient scriptures, traditional healing practices, and martial arts developed during childhood under the influence of his maternal grandfather, Ponnappan Asan. Ponnappan Asan belonged to the ancestral lineage of Athangode Asan, who was associated with the disciple tradition of Sage Agastya.
A Daring Journey That Began at the Age of Fifteen
After completing his tenth-grade education, at approximately fifteen years of age, he left home with a strong desire to learn ancient disciplines directly from traditional teachers. Despite financial difficulties and numerous challenges, he remained committed to his quest for knowledge and continued his journey.
From Chennai to Tiruvannamalai
After reaching Chennai, he visited Bangaru Adigalar, who was associated with the Adhiparasakthi Temple at Melmaruvathur. He subsequently travelled to Tiruvannamalai, where he met Yogi Ramsuratkumar. That encounter and the encouragement he received became significant experiences in his spiritual quest, strengthening his determination to continue exploring the deeper dimensions of traditional wisdom.
From Vijayawada to Kashi and Rishikesh
Continuing his journey through Vijayawada, he eventually reached Kashi (Varanasi), where he pursued his spiritual studies and continued searching for teachers who could guide him. Having heard about Sharayogi Purandaradas since childhood, he developed a strong desire to find him and study Sharayoga under his guidance. This aspiration eventually led him to Rishikesh.
A New World of Knowledge in the Presence of Gurus
In Rishikesh, he came into contact with Poikamalai Thiruvadikal and Sharayogi Purandaradas, under whose guidance he studied Sharayoga and Nadishastra. He subsequently pursued studies under various spiritual teachers in several traditional disciplines, including Sharayoga, Rajayoga, Kundalini Yoga, Kriya Yoga, Mantra Vidya, Aghora Tantra, Bhairava Tantra, Marma Vidya, Silambam, and Adimurai. Over the course of his spiritual journey, he received instruction and initiations in various disciplines from approximately sixteen gurus. Through nearly thirteen years of dedicated study and practice, he developed a broad foundation of traditional knowledge.
The Kailash Pilgrimage: Another Chapter in His Spiritual Quest
In 1989, he completed a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, marking an important milestone in his spiritual life. The pilgrimage holds a special place in his journey of spiritual exploration and forms part of the broader path of learning, practice, and wisdom he pursued under the guidance of his teachers.
Returning Home and Facing New Challenges
After years of travelling and studying, he returned to his hometown in 1998. Rebuilding his life presented several challenges, requiring him to adapt to changing circumstances and fulfil his responsibilities. At one stage, he worked as a conductor with Nesamony Transport Corporation, undertaking the practical responsibilities of everyday life while continuing his personal journey.
Spirituality and Family Life: Two Paths, One Philosophy of Life
Following his guru's guidance, he embraced family life while continuing his spiritual practices and fulfilling his responsibilities towards his family. He sought to harmonise his worldly responsibilities with his spiritual pursuits, remaining committed to sharing the knowledge and disciplines he had acquired with others. For him, family life and spiritual development became complementary aspects of a broader philosophy of life.
From Seeker to Guru
Beginning in 1999, he started training disciples in various traditional disciplines. Through teaching Sharayoga and other practices in different parts of Kerala, he contributed to the continuation of the Guru–Shishya Parampara, the traditional lineage of teacher and disciple. Having trained more than a thousand disciples, he places considerable importance on preserving traditional knowledge and transmitting it to future generations.
